The Darkside is a unique piece of furniture that stands out in any space. Its design is a deconstructed interpretation of the iconic album cover created by the collective Hipgnosis in the 1970s. The cover features a prism reflecting white light and separating it into different colors. Teixeira and Miyahira have taken this concept and applied it to their design, separating it by color, form, and texture.
Constructed from stainless steel and acrylic, the Darkside is both a stool and a side table. Its rock and roll design serves as a constant reminder of one of the greatest albums of all time. The stool's dimensions are 400 mm in width, 400 mm in depth, and 450 mm in height, making it a versatile piece that can fit into various spaces.
The Darkside was designed in 2016 in Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The designers faced challenges in realizing their vision, particularly in finding a place to make the acrylic cut for the seat. They had to travel to the nearest city that offered this service. The seat needed to be thick and solid to support a person, and the base structure was made of black-painted stainless steel.
Despite the challenges, Teixeira and Miyahira's dedication and creativity shone through. The Darkside stool was awarded Silver in the A' Furniture Design Award in 2018, a prestigious accolade given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The award recognizes designs that introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder, and the Darkside stool certainly fits this description.
The Darkside is a testament to the designers' ability to transform a simple piece of furniture into a tribute to a legendary rock band. It is a unique, contemporary, and industrial piece that adds a touch of rock and roll to any room. The design is a perfect blend of form and function, making it a worthy recipient of the Silver A' Design Award.
